Towards the 2024 Peaceful Regional Elections in the Land of Papua New Hope for the Future

Jayapura- To ensure that the 2024 regional elections run safely and orderly, various strategic steps need to be taken. First, close coordination between the provincial government, TNI-Polri and related agencies is very important. This collaboration will anticipate potential vulnerabilities that could disrupt the implementation of the Pilkada.

Second, the active role of the community, religious, traditional leaders and the general public is very much needed in maintaining security stability. Support from these figures can be the key to fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the creation of peaceful elections.

Another step that is no less important is increasing security, especially in conflict-prone areas such as Puncak, Yahukimo and Nduga Regencies. The government must also pay attention to security infrastructure such as CCTV and street lighting, especially in provincial capitals like Jayapura. On the other hand, an invitation to pray together across religions can strengthen the spirit of unity and prayer for successful regional elections.

No less important, the neutrality of ASN (State Civil Apparatus) must also be upheld. ASN who are involved in practical politics can damage public confidence in the implementation of regional elections. The Minister of Home Affairs has emphasized that ASN must maintain neutrality in order to create fair elections.

Threats from the KKB also need to be responded to wisely. Dialogue and negotiation steps with this group could be a long-term solution to create more comfortable conditions in Papua. If dialogue is inclusive and transparent, it can help defuse tensions. Apart from that, economic and infrastructure development must continue to be a priority for the government so that people’s welfare increases, so that dissatisfaction which is often exploited by radical groups can be minimized.

With strong synergy between the government, community and key figures, as well as a focus on development and security, Papua can realize the expected peaceful regional elections. All of these steps aim to ensure that the 2024 Pilkada is not just a democratic party, but also a momentum for Papua to become more advanced and prosperous.
