The Traditional Council urges the Papuan people to maintain peace ahead of the regional elections

Jayapura – The Papuan Traditional Council (DAP) appealed to the community in nine districts/cities in this area to maintain peace ahead of the simultaneous regional head elections (Pilkada) on November 27 2024.

Chairman of the Papuan Traditional Council Mananwir Beba Yan Pieter Yarangga in Sentani, Friday, said that the Pilkada is a national agenda that must be successful for all components of society without exception.

“Security in Papua must be prioritized first so that the implementation of simultaneous regional elections in nine districts/cities can run well and smoothly,” he said.

According to Yarangga, customs must accept all prospective pairs of candidates who will run for regional elections simultaneously, whether at the district, city or provincial level.

“Tradition is a common home for all people or children in this country, so anyone who comes must be blessed to be able to compete at the five-yearly democratic festival,” he said.

He explained that customs are also at the forefront in maintaining the security situation and public order (kamtibmas) at the current stage of the regional elections.

“Indigenous Papuan children must be able to protect their area so that it remains safe and peaceful during the stages until the regional election process takes place,” he said.

He added that even though there are differences in choices, friendship must still be maintained and maintained so that the regional election process can take place peacefully and on time.

“Remember, this regional election should not damage the traditional order which has been well maintained, socio-cultural values must be a strong foundation for maintaining peace in Papua,” he said.
